Discarded
objects
and
various
materials
intrigue
me with
their
shapes,
colors
and
previous
histories.
Deciding
ways
to attach
the
objects
together
and
which
features
to accentuate
motivates
the
assembling
of the
sculptures.
Adhering
scraps
of wood
with
found
objects
such
as bowls,
spoons,
wire
floral
forms,
gourds,
sink
faucets,
chess
pieces
and
ornaments
and
rocks
or straw
together
using
glues,
wire,
string,
nails
or screws
produces
assemblages
revealing
the
handmade
imprint.
The
costumed
model
is approached
in the
same
manner,
using
the
figure
as a
sculptural
support
for
found
objects
such
as mop
heads,
sieves,
straw
baskets
and
fabrics
of texture
and
pattern.
The
viewer
is encouraged
to identify
familiar
objects
and
then
discover
their
metamorphosis
in the
assembled
sculpture
or model.
The
model
is photographed
as a
documentary
study
of a
tribe
member
in ceremonial
costume
who
by the
costume
he wears
and
the
objects
he holds
is transformed
into
an image
representing
an immortal
being
of an
unidentified
religion.
The
figure
becomes
the
seer
or witness
or Prime
Mover
in my
paintings
and
drawings.
On canvas
or paper
I paint
the
figure
and
one
or more
sculptures
in acrylic,
oil
or gouache.
Around
and
over
the
figure
and
sculptures
I paint
colorful
forms
moving
and
swirling
with
the
energy
of life,
the
beginning
of all
things,
the
connecting
ether
of all
that
is.
I wish
the
viewer
to recognize
the
beauty
and
subtle
grace
of mundane
items
in the
sculptures
and
on the
figures.
And
the
colorful
forms
are
the
unseen
universal
energies
surrounding
us,
made
visible.
